Day 3

The outline I am using for discovering my ministry comes from the acrostic, S.H.A.P.E. which stands for Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. This week we are focusing on Spiritual gifts.

Yesterday we looked at Romans 12:1-5 and saw four signposts on the road to discovering our ministry.

Today we continue with Romans 12:6-8 and see a fifth signpost - Spiritual Gifts.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." (NIV)

This is not the only list of spiritual gifts in the New Testament. Others are found in Ephesians 4, 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. We will look at those later. But this list of seven grace gifts is foundational and fundamental as I see it.

Paul is giving an orderly presentation on ministry that flows naturally from his thoughts in Romans 12:1-5. Present your body as a living sacrifice. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Think soberly about yourself and the faith God has given you. See yourself as one member of a body of many members who have unique functions.

Now see seven grace gifts that motivate the different members of the one body: Prophecy, Serving, Exhorting. Giving. Leading. Mercy.

I find it fascinating and insightful that right after the list of seven gifts there appears to be a guiding verse for each gift in the exact order the gifts are presented. Take a look. What do you think?

Prophecy - Rom. 12:9 "Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil. Hold fast to what is good. "

Serving - 12:10 "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor"

Teaching - 12:11 "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord"

Exhorting - 12:12 "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer"

Giving - 12:13 "Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality"

Leading - 12:14 "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them"

Mercy - 12:15 "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep"

Talk to you tomorrow as we unwrap these gifts starting with prophecy.
